What is Life Coaching?
"Having a Life Coach is like having a personal fitness trainer for all the other aspects of your life…"
What is Life Coaching?The field of Life Coaching is relatively new, and still being defined, but think of it this way: if your interest was in physical fitness you could just join a gym and try to figure out what to do. And hope you'll stick to it.
But what if you hired a personal trainer? Hiring a trainer would give you…
- a professional to help clarify your interests and goals;
- personal attention and informed assessment of your current condition;
- an exercise plan to reach your goals, with expert instruction, equipment advice, feedback and encouragement along the way.
In short: an expert's time and focus to see you succeed.
Having a Life Coach is like having a personal fitness trainer for all the other aspects of your life:
- work & career,
- creativity & personal fulfillment,
- family & relationships,
- time & activity,
- lifestyle & surroundings,
- purpose & direction…
Basically, wherever you want better direction and results in your life.
Why would I use a Life Coach?Everyone could use perspective, encouragement and feedback. Especially if you want your life to be meaningful on your terms:
- to make room for your real passions - like learning, creativity or life experiences;
- to bring better order to your life - in your lifestyle, work, relationships or surroundings;
- to know that you're making your life count - for yourself and for others.
Maybe you don't even know what kind of change you want yet - just that you aren't satisfied. A Life Coach will help you identify what you really need and want, help develop a plan and see the plan put into action.
| The key advantage is having an objective, motivated, outside source of perspective and encouragement to turn your desire for change into demonstrable results - richer, more rewarding days, weeks and months. |
How would a Life Coach help if I can't do this for myself?You don't see a football coach interrupt a game to throw the ball for the quarterback - but he's right there with input to help him play his best. You won't see a basketball coach take a foul shot - but in practice she'll say, "Okay, put your fingers there, stand like this, shift your weight like so, now try that…"
People who achieve their goals in life rarely do it on their own. And hiring a coach is simply a brilliant opportunity to help you have the life you want. It's the sort of focussed, one-on-one attention and input (and occasional friendly nudge) that will make the difference.
When would I need a Life Coach?Since change is constant (and unavoidable) coaching can be helpful anytime. But the occasion to get in touch with a Life Coach might be…
- you want change - you feel "stuck" or need direction, you aren't satisfied with where your personal or professional life is headed;
- you're reaching a transition point - you're finishing your education, choosing a career, changing jobs, or retiring, and you want to set your own course;
- there's a change in 'season' - young kids are now in school, grown kids have moved out, or your family situation is changing, and you're wondering, "What now?"
- change has come to you - unforeseen events have changed the course of your life and now you need to decide what to do from here.
What will a Life Coach do for me?For one thing, you'll be a lot more excited and motivated about your life! A Life Coach comes alongside to discover your potential and help build the life you want…
- to help uncover and understand your true desires and untapped abilities (and probably some hindrances);
- to work out a plan to get the best parts of your self into gear (and clear away the impediments);
- to see you through decisions that are meaningful and practical;
- help you maintain your momentum and focus until you're achieving what you want life to count for.
And that's what makes life full and rewarding - to know what you're made for, and see it happen. You'll be amazed at how your enthusiasm for your own life will flourish.
What makes a Life Coach different?A Life Coach has experience and specialized skills to…
- guide you through your choices - so you know what you're believing and acting on, and why;
- bring objectivity, perspective, accountability and confidentiality to the process - which someone who is already personally involved with you might not be able or willing to do.
What results will I see?Life Coaching is designed to bring out your best, so expect to be amazed, encouraged and excited about what you can do, where you can go, who you can be.
- You'll get up knowing life is something to look forward to;
- Your days will be more satisfying, meaningful and relevant;
- Your evenings will be opportunities, not time left over;
- You'll go to bed secure in the knowledge that your life has direction and purpose.
